The phrase 'mise en scene' is all to do with physical environment and surroundings. It's literal definition is 'staging'.
Basically, it is to do with the arrangement of scenery and props used to represent the scene or area where, usually a play or film, is taking place.
A connotation is basically a meaning of a word or phrase that is suggested or implied. The impression that a word gives beyond it's defined meaning...
... As opposed to a denotation, which is the literal meaning of a word. It could be described as the dictionary definition of something.
